Welcome to the Swedish Midwifery Profession!
To practice as a midwife in Sweden, you must hold a professional license issued by the National Board of Health and Welfare (Socialstyrelsen). Our unique model is based on a dual qualification as both a Registered Nurse and a Registered Midwife (RN/RM). Depending on where you received your training, please follow the path below that applies to you.
EU/EEA Trained
If you hold a degree from an EU or EEA country, your qualifications are recognized under the EU directive. To practice in Sweden, you must apply for a formal license from the National Board of Health and Welfare (Socialstyrelsen).
Trained outside EU/EEA
If you were trained outside the EU/EEA, the process involves an assessment of your education, a proficiency test, and proof of Swedish language skills. This ensures all midwives meet the required standards for safe and knowledge-based care in Sweden.
